Negative space, is the space around and between the subject of an image.
What is positive and Negative Space and why should we use it in Art?
Positive space refers to the main focus of a picture, while negative space refers to the background. When used creatively and intelligently, positive and negative space together can tell a story using visual composition alone. The negative space of a painting can often be more important than the positive space in creating a feeling.
Why is Negative Space Important?
Negative space, is the space around and between the subject of an image.
Negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, not the subject itself, forms an interesting or artistically relevant shape, and such space occasionally is used to artistic effect as the “real” subject of an image.
Negative space in a composition can help identify the focal point. Negative space is most often neutral or contrasting, focusing our attention on the main subject, the positive shape, and providing a place for the viewer’s eye to rest
Escher (above) was a Dutch graphic design artist. He created illustrations for books, designed tapestries, and made murals, but his main art form was printmaking.
Escher’s art shows his strong interest in math and geometry. Many of Escher’s illustrations are called tessellations, which he called Regular Divisions of the Plane. Tessellations are like tiles, fitting into one another without gaps or overlap. They are like puzzle pieces fitting together.
