BOARDS AND PAPERS

  1. Prepared canvas boards are relatively inexpensive and are ideal when trying out oils for the first time.
    1. Lighter-weight canvases are recommended for practice work only.
  2. Hardboard, which you can buy from builders’ suppliers, is excellent yet inexpensive support.  Most artists use the smooth side, as the rough side has a very insistent, mechanical texture.
  3. Plywood, chipboard and MDF (Medium-density Fibreboard) are also suitable for painting.
  4. Prepare the board with primer (see preparing your canvas)
  5. Oil sketching Paper is specially prepared for oil painting and is textured to resemble canvas weave.  Available in pads with tear-off sheets, it is handy for outdoor sketches and practice work.
